What it Takes to be a Counselor

You are my hiding place
You always fill my heart
With songs of deliverance
Whenever I feel afraid
I will trust in you
I will trust in you
(A favorite song at Alkulana…from the Psalms)

For many people – campers and counselors alike – Alkulana is a hiding place, a place of safety and love—a caring community that points children to the ultimate hiding place in God’s love and grace through Christ.

At Alkulana, children learn that it is OK to be a child, OK to have fun. It is also a place where children learn, grow and mature. Counselors are a key in that growth and maturation process and are crucial in making Alkulana feel like a second home.

As our slogan states, Camp Alkulana is a place in which children learn about the reality of God’s love. This love manifests itself through the interactions the children have with their counselors. From teaching a child how to swim (or even get into the water for the first time), cooking a meal with wet firewood in the middle of a rainstorm, to tucking them in at night, counselor’s actions are driven by a common cause – the love that encompasses us through and because of Jesus Christ.

“How great is God’s love for all who worship Him? Greater than the distance between heaven and earth.”
Psalm 103:11 CEV

Once you enter the Alkulana driveway, you are considered to be part of a family – the Alkulana family, where the reality of God’s love does indeed, come to life.
